Volunteering
in the Community
ACAN is a community network of groups and projects offering a range of services to the community, many of which help residents to save money and live better, as well as reducing our impact on the planet and helping to restore nature. Most of our groups have interesting volunteering opportunities with like-minded people. They have their own Facebook pages for more information. These groups include: Alton Repair Café – volunteer repairers; Energy Alton – free home energy surveys and advice on cutting your energy bills; Community Cupboard – surplus food given away free to all, help reduce food waste; Alton Local Food Initiative (ALFI) – help yourself to fruit, veg and herbs in season; Young ACAN – promotes youth-centred action on the climate crisis; Alton Community Share – free library of jigsaws, games, toys; Alton and Villages Local Action for Nature – wildlife verges, community gardens for pollinators, hedge planting, protecting the River Wey.
Good quality, clean, clothes donations always welcomed to aid our local surrounding community and help out others who may be in need of a helping hand. It is also an opportunity to live more sustainably by re-using, recycling and rehoming outgrown clothing.
Alton Community Care is a volunteer transport service for people attending medical appointments who do not have their own transport and are unable to access public transport. We are always seeking volunteers to help with this worthy cause. We need as many DRIVERS as possible in order to fulfil our bookings. You give your time but we cover your fuel expenses. Using your own car to collect passengers from their home, take them to appointments, and return them home. You choose where, when and how often you drive. Most of our journeys are local, but we cover hospitals as far away as Southampton. We also need COORDINATORS to take the telephone bookings. You give your time, but we cover all your incidental expenses. Please note: references and Enhanced DBS checks are a required part of our recruitment process.
We are always looking for volunteers to help at the Community Cupboard. We are an environmental project focused on keeping good food from waste. We provide free fresh fruit and veg, and other food items that we collect daily from surplus (unsold) stock at the shops. e are an environmental project focused on keeping good food from waste. Four Marks Care is a local voluntary group, set up over 40 years ago, to help residents of Four Marks who would appreciate a little neighbourly assistance. These days we do not always know our neighbours; it’s sometimes difficult to know who to turn to if we need help. We are a charitable organisation with volunteer drivers and we are in great need for more drivers. Drivers use their own cars, determine their own availability and receive reimbursement of expenses i.e. petrol. You can do as many or as few drives as you wish. This will help our less able Four Marks residents to attend non-emergency medical appointments. There are many residents in Four Marks who are in great need of our help and sadly we are struggling with a lack of drivers. If you are local to Four Marks or the surrounding areas and are interested in volunteering as a driver, we would love to hear from you. SO PLEASE CALL US ON 07393 538152 if you are interested.

Our mission is to raise awareness of mental wellbeing and beat loneliness and isolation. We have volunteer programmes for Adults and Young People. Our programmes are explicit about the benefits of volunteering for the person or people they support.
We recruit volunteers locally. Our volunteers are very special people who give considerable time and effort to families. Volunteers initially go through a training process called a preparation course and this gives them a complete overview of what Home-Start does and also the confidence to go into family homes and offer support. Training is ongoing so people can develop their own skills. People who have joined us, have completed the course, supported families and then gone on to find full-time employment or education. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and have very diverse skills. We also have other opportunities for volunteers, whereby they can join our amazing community team who help raise vital funds.
The King’s Arms Youth Project (KA) is a charity that works to support the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing of young people. We have been supporting young people for over 20 years and now have two centres – Alton and Petersfield. Our centres are welcoming, safe spaces with a pool table, table football, games station, craft area, sofas everywhere and sometimes we also do cooking. Each week we run a range of clubs including after-school, mentoring, young carers, additional needs and faith. Our aim is for every young person to know their worth, fulfil their potential and to have fun. We are open to young people of secondary school or college age; our Young Carer’s programme also accepts young people from age 8 years upwards. We do have volunteer vacancies if you would like to get involved – we would love to hear from you.
Alton Lions Club is a group of service-minded men and women who are interested in doing volunteer work to improve our community. We are young people, families and seniors.
